Virtual reality is changing the interface between people
and information technology by offering new ways for the communication of information, the
visualization of processes, and the creative expression of ideas. This course provides the
basis for understanding and applying this exciting new technology.
BENEFITS of ATTENDING
- Understand the technologies, underlying principles,
potential and limits of VR
- Learn about the criteria for useful applications
- Understand the process of creating virtual environments
- Gain practical skills by working through laptop demos of the
development of VR environments.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This is an introductory course intended for design
engineers, manufacturing engineers, engineering managers and anyone interested in the
basic principles of Virtual Reality. The course does not require special computer
knowledge, programming expertise, or a strong mathematical background.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
- Definition and Characteristics of VR
Strengths, weaknesses and the business case for VR
A survey of VR hardware, including head-mounted displays, BOOM, projection-based
systems such as CAVE, PowerWall, Imersadesk, data gloves, force-feedback
devices, etc.
An overview of commercial, as well as freely-available, software systems.
- VR Resources on the Internet
A survey of the wealth of VR resources on the web, including browser plug-ins, user
groups, white papers, vendor sites, research centers, resource listings, online VR
environments, code samples, tutorials, etc.
- Human Factors and Human Perception
Human senses, psychological depth cues, sound and hearing, navigation through virtual
worlds.
- Geometric Modeling Principles for VR
The use of CAD systems, polygonal representation.
- Computer Graphics Principles for VR
